The koru design is represented in many cultures and has a quality of new life, growth, adaptability… In NZ the koru can be found in the forests, with the many ferns, or on the shore, where the waves break…
This piece is designed and cut-out while wet (’leather-hard’), ensuring the design is clear on both the inside and out. Then while still wet, it is turned over to carve the design onto the second side. Once tidied, dried and fired, multiple coats of glaze are applied.
I was amazed at the mirror-like quality of the glaze in the centre of the bowl. Never had that happen before! Lovely.
