Gretel – Japanese Akita

August 27th, 2010

This gorgeous girl was my first Akita (and she was from Mangere, like me).  She was true to the Akita type: dignified, strong minded and Ichiban (Number 1).  She gave us four beautiful pups, and a lifetime of sharing her amazing knowledge of how it all works.

This dog was one tough cookie.  She had gotten through a serious spinal injury and lived with it for 4 years.  Even until her very end, she was the ‘top dog’ in our household of six Japanese Akitas.

What I love most about this picture is that this was drawn from a photo I took when my partner had just pulled into the driveway, and this is the look on her face as if to say “Yay, he’s home”.

We’ll always miss our ‘Boo Boo’, but her influence will carry on…

These portraits are hand-drawn onto a fired piece, using an underglaze pencil. Once the drawing is completed, they are fired, glazed, and then fired again.
