Tui Korowai Vase

March 29th, 2010

Korowai means feather cloak in Maori.  As soon as I finished this design, I knew the name.

I had been wanting to make another Tui vase for many years now (the first I made was ’slip-trailed’, and so time consuming that I kept it).   A friend wanted to commission me to make a Kereru (NZ Wood Pigeon) vase, and in thinking of a design for him, this Tui design evolved which incorporates elements of my previous pieces.

Once removed from the mold, this piece was designed and cut-out whilst still wet (leather-hard). After the first firing, 3-5 coats of glaze are applied, picking out the details and blending colours where needed.  Once the piece is fired again, two different overglaze firings are done, the first for the white gold details around the neck feathers, and the second is mother-of-pearl that creates the iridescent effect over the bird.
